Nitrile vs. vinyl vs. latex exam gloves: which belongs where in a clinic

PPE · · 4 min read

A practical comparison of exam glove materials for clinics: durability, allergy risk, tactile feel, cost per box and where each type makes sense.

Gloves are the highest-volume consumable in most practices, and the material decision affects cost, staff comfort and patient safety every day.

Nitrile

Synthetic rubber, latex-free, the default choice for exam and procedure use. Nitrile resists punctures better than the alternatives, holds up to most clinic chemicals, and shows tears clearly because it splits rather than pinholes. Modern thin-gauge nitrile has tactile feel close to latex. It costs more per box than vinyl, though the gap has narrowed since 2022.

Vinyl

PVC-based, latex-free and the cheapest per box. Vinyl fits loosely, tears more easily and offers less barrier protection during longer or fluid-heavy tasks. It's appropriate for low-risk, short-duration work: handling non-sterile supplies, cleaning, food service in a break room. Many practices keep a box at the front desk and nowhere else.

Latex

Natural rubber with excellent elasticity and feel. The problem is allergy: a meaningful share of healthcare workers and patients react to latex proteins, and reactions can be serious. Most practices have gone latex-free entirely to avoid managing the risk. If you still use latex, it should be powder-free and clearly segregated.

Sizing and fit

Order the sizes your staff actually wear, not a default spread. A quick count during a staff meeting usually reveals that "medium" is over-ordered and "extra small" or "extra large" is under-ordered. Ill-fitting gloves tear more and slow people down.

Thickness

Glove thickness is stated in mils. Three to four mils is standard exam grade; five to six mils suits longer procedures or chemical handling. Thicker isn't automatically better: dexterity drops and cost rises.

Buying

Gloves are almost always cheaper by the case (10 boxes) than by the box, and pricing has been volatile since 2020. A contracted price held for the year protects the budget better than chasing the lowest spot price each month.

ClinicSupply US offers case pricing on every glove line, with samples available before you commit to a brand or size run. See the PPE catalog.
